Joon Kwon This Is Natural 17 April 2012 - 29 April 2012 Free Entry

Joon Kwon’s second solo exhibition ‘THIS IS NATURAL’ is about human power, engendered by the daily grind of existence.
Joon Kwon seeks to present these powers as superhuman/supernatural powers that transcend what we perceive to be ordinarily human. In her illustrations, the powers are portrayed in the form of nictitating membranes, of laser beams and artificial fire emitted by human bodies. These give the visuals a surreal, science-fiction feel. However, in the familiarity of the portrayals, she also attempts to convey that these superpowers are natural.
This begets the question as to what is natural. The superpowers suggested here is natural; an innate power that is honed and augmented by the everyday challenges we face as people. This power evolves organically in the process. When people become empowered, they are able to see and feel the truth of the System. They are able to see through the flaws of the System, and attempt to rectify them. They can protect themselves from the hostile and polluting atmosphere they inhale via the System. The potential for empowerment exists in everyone, but the price to pay for this power is the difficulties one has to overcome to attain it. As such, the message conveyed here is one of hope…
We are all Superheroes in our own ways, in our lives.
